Task I
Read the chapter individually. After completing the assigned pages, produce an EAT sheet. This task will be submitted for assessment.

Ozymandias

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said" "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings;
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Percy Bysshe Shelley

  1. One of theme's demonstrated in the poem 'Ozymandias' is that things that used to be important and respected can become useless symbols that everybody ignores. Ozymandias was once a king of kings, feared and respected. Now he's a decaying, dead, dilapidated effigy that very few people even knew about. In line eleven to the end the poem says: "Nothing beside remains. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away.

Shelley's poem 'Ozymandias' can definitely relate to Frost's 'Nothing Gold Can Stay.' In 'Ozymandias' the king of kings used to be 'golden' he used to be respected and important. But as time went by people realized that he really wasn't all that. He became unnoticed almost to the point of being hated. That's because people realized too late that really Ozymandias isn't invulnerable, invincible and incorruptible. He's just a guy.

This poem can teach us a lot about what to expect of people. When we are young, everyone can seem like angelic beings but then we realise that they are not. Sometimes they can, in fact, turn out to be awful people but we don't realise that until later. In 'Nothing Gold Can Stay' the first line reads: "Nature's first green is gold." This means that when people are young and 'green,' everyone seems to be golden and perfect. The poem 'Ozymandias' says that Ozymandias used to be a king of kings, but he turned out not to be such a great guy after all.

  3. Sometimes people think that gold can stay gold for ever. In the poem “Ozymandias” there was a high and mighty statue that everybody loved a remembered but then got destroyed and everybody hates it."My name is Ozymandias, king of kings;Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"Nothing beside remains”. This shows that it was high and mighty that everybody loves. There is a king that rules the land who is gold and strong, but then in a flash is destroyed and everybody forgets. The moral of the peom “Ozymandias” that can up with was that don’t feel to attach to gold situations.

The poem “Ozymandias” relates to the poem “Nothing gold can stay” . From the poem Ozymandias the quote "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings;Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"Nothing beside remains” means that the once high and mighty statue can be forgotten in seconds. In the poem “Nothing gold can stay”means that the best of opportunity's can disappear in seconds or the best never lasts. The poems are related to each other because the message in both poems are the best of situations can stay for ever.

In the poem “Ozymandias” there is a statue of a king that is high and mighty that everybody loves and will remember, but in a flash turns around to nothing. A broken statue that people forgot about and nobody remembers. So the moral lesson from that poem was don’t fall in love with the best situations because it might just collapse. In the poem “Nothing gold can stay”, Frost talks about nature and how the sun will rise to its highest point and then fall to a sunset. The moral of the poem “nothing gold can stay” was don’t get too attached to gold.

  4. Step One:

The theme that the poem Ozymandias develops is sometimes people do not understand that even the most glamorous, famous and intelligent people are like all of us, they follow the same cycle of life and they always will have a fantastic follower who will go through the same process. This message is shown when Percy Shelly states “The lone and level sands stretch far away” line 15. The context of this quotation is when the magnificent sculptor has disintegrated into nothing and it has finished its life cycle, and a new king will be born. Some also do not understand that all famous people are still just people, they just have a great talent that has been recognized.

    Step Two:

The two poems Ozymandias and Nothing Gold Can Stay are similar because they both create the theme that all things will complete the life cycle no matter how fabulous or glamorous they are and they should live those times with a positive point of view. Some need to let loose and relax, enjoy life, some even may need to ask themselves the question of why do the same thing everyday? Two lines that demonstrate this theme are “Her early leaf’s a flower” and "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings.” Both these quotations show happiness and living in the moment before things go downhill in the poems.

    Step Three:

In life, the themes from Ozymandias and Nothing Gold Can Stay can teach us that everyone in the world will complete the cycle of life and that since good times do not last forever so you should always live life to its fullest. Eventually, our time will end, when people live life to the fullest and complete all the things they wanted to do and achieve then they will probably fell joy and accomplished before the end. Most people probably are not scared of death itself but for the time they have left. These poems teach us that having a negative point of view is a waste of time, we should have positive perspectives.

  5. Sometimes people take advantage of their opportunities to do wrong. This quote demonstrates how people take advantages of their opportunities to do wrong, from the poem "Ozymandias." "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings;Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" This king scares everyone so they listen to him, but later on he looses his respect because people stop caring.

The poem "Ozymadias" and the poem" Nothing Gold Can Stay," both are about opportunities. Opportunities come and go. In " Ozymandias," the king was respected and feared, but then people stopped caring and all his respect was gone. In " Nothing Gold Can Stay," it says " Her early leafs a flower, but only so and hour." This tells us that opportunities come and go.

These two poems tell us that we should take advantage of our opportunities, but not to do wrong. The advice from the two poems help us when we get older and we have opportunities to do something in our lives and to reach a goal. For example, if you get a scholarship to a university and you want to be a doctor or an engineer, we should take advantage of the opportunity

  6. Task 2- Ozymandias
    Step 1:
Sometimes people believe that they are immensely important and powerful, but when they are gone, nobody thinks about them anymore and life goes on. In the poem ‘Ozymandias’, the people living after the great king “stamped on these lifeless things.”(Line 7) Ozymandias might have thought that he should have been mourned over but no one did. His body was left to rot with nothing around him but bleak emptiness. The story of Ozymandias told by the traveller does not reveal any good things about the great king. Ozymandias seemed to be a selfish and demanding person who thought about nothing but his popularity, therefore, no one ever thought about him again after his death. They walk over him as if he never existed.

    Step 2:
Shelley’s poem ‘Ozymandias’ relates to Frost’s Poem ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’. In ‘Ozymandias’, King Ozymandias thought that he was the gold in the world and that life would not survive without him. However, this was not true, he was actually not as important as he thought he was. In Frost’s poem, it describes how nothing gold (meaning good or happy) can stay for long. King Ozymandias thought that he was “golden” and inaccurately predicted that people would be miserable because “nothing gold can stay”. He therefore left a message on his headstone telling people to “despair” and feel hopeless because he was dead. These poems relate to each other because they both have the theme that good things don’t last forever.

    Step 3:
The poems ‘Ozymandias’ and ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’ teach us positive moral messages that we can use in our lives. ‘Ozymandias’ teaches us not to be selfish and over demanding of people because they will end up in a state of hatred towards you. It also teaches us that these approaches are not a good ways to find attention. ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’ teaches us not to get attached to anything good because eventually it will disappear. We can use these messages every day. For example, when we are simply friendly and social, we get attention that is genuinely nice instead of negative and derogatory. Another example, is if you get especially attached to a certain stuffed animal and one day it goes missing you will be upset, however, if you like it but don’t have to have it you can prevent yourself from this misery. These poems teach us very useful messages that can help us live cheery and positive lives.

  7. SEE PARAGRAPH: OZYMANDIAS (TASK 1)
Sometimes people’s ego can get in the way of what really is important. In ‘Ozymandias’, the poem is about a king who thought he was the best, but around his statue dead and decaying dust and dirt lies. “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings” (line 10). This quotation shows how Ozymandias was really full of himself to put a statue that sys that. He was obviously very obnoxious about everything to neglect the people’s needs and now all of his people are dead. Good one, Ozymandias.
RELATIONSHIP: NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY-OZYMANDIAS (TASK 2)
The poems Ozymandias and Nothing Gold Can Stay both are about something or someone who was great, but lost their ‘gold’. In Nothing Gold Can Stay, the poem talks about how nature can only hold her hardest hue for only an hour and how everything gold (good) will eventually pass. In Ozymandias, The king was once great, but then lost his rule due to neglecting his people. Both of these poems tell us to cherish everything gold and to attempt to attain lofty privileges without over-doing them.
REAL LIFE: WHAT DO WE TAKE AWAY FROM THIS? (TASK 3)
We can definitely learn two lessons from these two famous poems. Firstly, we can learn to grasp everything great with every ounce of energy that our body could ever possibly attain. Secondly, we can learn not to be urgent to gain power. In Ozymandias, the king becomes too greedy and builds a statue of himself while neglecting his people’s needs. From these poems, we should learn to cherish life and to be patient always.

  8. Title: Ozymandias- This word sounds like a name. The word sounds as if it is the name of a wizard or royal person. I predict that the poem “Ozymandias” is about a wizard or somebody of royalty.
Precis: The narrator meets someone from an ‘antique’ land and tells the person tells him that there is a statue of a person in the desert. The statue is sunken in the sand and the face reflects a frown. On a pedestal the words, “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings; Look on my works, ye mighty and despair,” are written. Then sand surrounds it because there is nothing left of the statue.
Connotation/ Attitude: The connotation or tone of attitude of the poem seems to be negative. The author uses words like “vast, trunkless, half sunk, shattered, frown, wrinkled, sneer, cold, command, survive, lifeless, mocked, mighty, despair, nothing, remains, decay, wreck, boundless, bare, and lone.” These words are all negative words that set the poem’s tone.
Shift: I think the poem shifts after the line, “And on the pedestal these words appear:” because it talks about what the King says. Before, the poem talked about the scenery and what is in the sand. After that line, the poem talks about what the pedestal says.
Theme: Sometimes people respect and believe in somebody, but then begin to ignore or hate their leader because they realize certain faults. In other words, although somebody may seem really illustrious, later people may see that he/she is not a very good leader. For example, Hitler was a man everyone thought was a really great person because he promised so many incredible things during The Great Depression. Later, though he became one of the most hated people because he didn’t keep his promises. People realized that Hitler was not a good leader and they began to hate him. Ozymandias was a mighty king that everyone used to respect. Because he was not a good leader, everyone ignored him once he died. In conclusion, leaders need to keep their promises and remain a good leader or else followers may ignore or disrespect them.

I think Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem can relate to Robert Frost’s poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” In “Ozymandias” the king’s followers believed he was “golden” until they noticed his faults. Once his “gold” (power or respect) disappeared, people began to ignore his demands and indifferent his powers. In Frost’s poem the quote “Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold” explains that respect, trust and unforced power is hard to keep. Ozymandias may not have respected his followers so when he ceased, people ignored him.
These 2 poems can teach us life lessons. “Ozymandias” can teach me that if we build up trust with friends then people will respect me and trust me. If I don’t then I may not have true friends. This can affect me in a positive way because it teaches me that I should always be trustworthy and respectful because then I will be respected back. In “Nothing Gold Can Stay” the poem teaches me that happiness doesn’t last forever, but while it does I should live it fully. This can affect me in positive ways because when happiness or “gold” occurs in my life then I will know that I should be grateful. In conclusion, both poems taught me useful life lessons.

  9. Sometimes people try to remain unchanged and golden throughout their entire lives, then realize that it isn’t worth the strain, and give up. We see this in many places in our modern- day world. The ruined king in the poem “Ozymandias” tried to stay perfect and amazing, and disaster ensued when he realized that nobody’s perfect, and he should stop trying and just go with the flow. Ponyboy in “The Outsiders” realized this a long time ago. He was trying too hard to impress his older brother, Darry, and he figured out that no matter what, it just wasn’t good enough. He brought home B’s on his report card, and Darry wanted him to get A’s. When he did bring home straight A’s, Darry yelled at him so that they’d stay A’s. As you can see, Ponyboy was under too much stress to be perfect at everything that he did that he finally just gave up and pledged to do his best, no more, no less. Darry pressured him to be the best and to be perfect, but Ponyboy just wanted to be Ponyboy.
The poem “Ozymandias” is very much like the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” “Ozymandias centers around the idea that things were much better before they were changed and everything was destroyed. Things were better when they were golden. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” revolves mostly around the idea that nothing that is good lasts forever. In an instant, you can go from being powerful and respected to being alone and forgotten. This line is from ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay”, and perfectly describes my point. “Her early leaf’s a flower, But only so an hour” Things start out beautiful, and the whole world is beautiful, then you grow out of it. The king was new and stunning, and now he is broken- down in the middle of nowhere.
There are many ways that we can become better people by reading and following the advice of the two. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” teaches us to learn that good things must always come to an end. It will help us to not get our hopes up too high, and to get used to disappointment and failure. It also can help us to enjoy good things while we still can, so that we have enjoyed them long after they are gone. “Ozymandias” can teach us to be careful, because you can go from respected to stepped on before you can blink an eye. If people have given you respect, then you should be careful with what you do with it, otherwise people will simply brush you aside, like you weren’t even there. Like dust. Never there, never noticed, never loved.
So pay attention to these poems, people. You may learn something.

  10. A theme that could be derived from the poem Ozymandias could be that glorious items are only beautiful for a while, and then they are normal items that are disregarded and thrown away. Ozymandias was once a king, respected by everyone and now he is a decrepit statue that people barely pay attention to anymore. In lines 10 and 11 the poem states: “Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains.” This is saying that what once was glorious and respected by all, is now a total wreck and completely worthless.

Shelley’s poem ‘Ozymandias’ can relate to Robert Frost’s poem ‘Nothing Gold can Stay.’ In ‘Ozymandias’ the king was loved, and respected and his enemies had trepidation while facing him. This is when Ozymandias was golden during his time. Now, his people realize that he’s just another human being. Not some being who is superior to us. Now because of this, Ozymandias was disregarded and his subjects lost all faith in him. This told his people that he isn’t a superior person who cannot be trumped in battle by his foes, or a remarkable person to look up to. Ozymandias was just a normal person like the rest of them.

This poem can teach us that not everything is what it’s cracked up to be. When we come into the world, everything seems wonderful and new, and you want to see it all. However, as you grow older, things become ordinary and you have lost the sense of ecstasy that you once had as a child. The first line of ‘Nothing Gold can Stay’ declares: “Nature’s first green is gold.” This is when you had that kind of excitement, and when everything made you so happy. Now, Ozymandias thought everything would stay gold forever so he brought that way of thinking into his teachings so that he gained false confidence in himself. Once you lose the ‘gold’ in your life, everything changes.

  11. Sometimes people will obey the commands of someone if they have respect for that person. When that person's power is no longer effective, they will do anything to get it back, even if it means stepping on other people to do so. Even if they think they have regained their control but they are still powerless, they will give orders to everyone but no one will listen. They will be powerless, despised and humiliated and they may or may not realize that the gift of power they once possessed is now gone forever.

    Shelly's Ozymandias can relate to Frost's Nothing Gold Can Stay by showing us that everything is changing, sometimes for worse, and sometimes for the better. An example of this is shown in Ozymandias, "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings;
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck," Another example in our world today is technology. It is changing and it is making everyday life much easier for all of us. Sometimes change can make our lives harder and it can drive you crazy, but there is nothing you can do about it to make it stop.

Shelly's Ozymandias can teach us that we expect so much of one man and we do not realize that what we would expect of him is too much for one man to handle. Once Ozymandias gains too much power he changed for the worse, he started to be more egocentric and disrespectful. Eventually, Ozymandias became unmodifiable. Soon enough he will become self-obsessed and all he will say is "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings; Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!". This passage shows that he thinks everything still belonged to him and that he still considered himself almighty when in reality he was hated and not revered. When too much pressure of others wishing him to solve their problems it caused him to become deranged and this is why we have to understand that a man is just a man.

  12. Step I

Sometimes people can rule the world, but eventually it goes away. No matter how vast your land be, it never be that forever. In the poem Ozymandias, there is a line or two that goes “"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings; Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains”. This line represents my statement in a way that it shows the rise and fall of a great king.

    Step II
Ozymandias can relate to Frost’s poem because they both have the same moral. ‘Nuff Said.

    Step III
I think these poems can teach us that it doesn’t matter how much you have, because eventually it will all go away. That leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to the dark side of the force.

  13. Step 1
Sometimes people want to be remembered for a long time. Your gold is you fame or your contribution to the world and Ozymandias wants to be famous forever and also for everyone to know his name. This king thinks that people will remember him because of a big statue of himself but he never had done any contributions to the world. Everyone keeps walking by this statue and ignores it like it is not their just matter. The statue is being eroded by weather; it is nature’s way of saying that this king does not deserve the false distinction that he has given himself.

    Step 2
In these two poems the main theme is about nothing good can ever stay but also the time period is over a life time and beyond. In the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay it is about your life and that nothing gold can stay in your life only for a little while. Line 7-8 So dawn goes down today. Nothing gold can stay. In these lines it is saying nothing gold can stay on for a short period of time. In the poem Ozymandias this poem is about how he wanted to be famous and go down in history but he never did any contributions in the world. In line 14 The lone and level sands stretch far away. This line is important because no one is crowding the statue they are stay far away from it. The theme is based on a long period of time and nothing great can stay.

    Step 3
These poems can help us in our life because these poems tell us not to be selfish like Ozymandias. It also tells us to be not so dependent and want to be greedy just to be the opposite. All poems give a message and these poems tells us to be trustworthy not selfish and not to be greedy or dependent on one person or anyone all the time.

  14. Task 1 -
Sometimes people lose everything they have. This idea is that no matter who you are, or what the circumstances, you can lose everything. This theme can be found in the poem in line 12, ‘Nothing beside remains.’ This quote exemplifies the idea of having all lost, because the king in the poem used to have a powerful hand over his kingdom, but now he is forgotten. The author’s choice of adjectives also has an effect on the feeling and message emitted from the poem. For example, the words sneer, mocked, decay and despair all have negative connotations, which adds to the feeling of immense loss in the poem.

    Task 2 -
The two poems to relate to one another because they both have the message that sometimes people lose everything. In Shelley’s poem, a character named Ozymandias loses his legacy, and all there is left of him is a shattered statue of him in the desert. In Frost’s poem, the speaker is explaining that although all may seem good, everything may disappear one day, and the happiness brought by those things lost may not come back for a while. Although they involve different situations, the message that sometimes people can lose all they had is present in both poems.

    Task 3 -
These poems can teach us in life that nothing lasts forever and that people can lose everything they had. This may seem negative, although it isn’t because by accepting that we cannot control what happens to us will prepare us for when things do go wrong. If in life we never had difficulties or losses, we would not be able to handle a problem if it did occur.

  15. In this poem it is mostly about a statue that has fallen apart and has the great words “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings; look on my works, ye might, and despair!” The works of him have now fallen apart and are old ruins now all the people have left and his civilization has fallen apart.

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings;” This shows that he was once the great ruler of a great empire that has now fallen witch shows that he thought that he would last forever and now you probably would not remember them.

“Nothing beside remains. Round the decay” This shows that they empire that he once owned is now gone and has fallen apart. It did not last forever like he thought it would.

Sometimes people think that they will last forever and they never will.
This is shown when he says “Look on my works, ye mighty and despair!” and he thought that he and his works would last forever and he did not. This shows that because he thought wrong because not many people will still remember 20 years from now.

The two poems “Ozymandias” and “Nothing Gold Can Stay” both have the same message that nothing in this world can last for ever. In the last line of the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” it says “so dawn goes down today, nothing gold can stay” witch says it wont be gold forever and that it will run out.

Life changes, it sucks, deal with it.(accept life changes and you will be happier.)

  16. The poem ozymandias and nothing gold can stay have similarities.
In the poem nothing gold can stay means that there are a lot of things that are good like weekends fun things movies money all that kind of stuff does not last forever.
In ozymandias they talk about an old statue that is called king ozymandias and the statue is old and wrecked so that statues beauty does not last forever just like the poem says nothing gold can stay.

In life we can learn many new things everyday.
And all those fun things in life do not last forever.
So be strong and don’t keep your hopes up too high because nothing gold can stay.
Have an open mind so you can learn more and more.
