The Writing Task:
This week, your challenge is to utilize the image below within your story line in some way shape or form. Remember, try to use the writing tools taught in class to enrich your tale. Consider employing some of the following
- parallelism
- very short sentences (3)
- irony
- triple adverbs, adjectives
- compound and complex sentences
- a variation of the assigned sentence starters
- a 6 line piece of poetry
- useful vocabulary terms

"You sure can cuss good Dally" (pg 82)

This comment reveals a little of the hero worship Johnny has for Dallas. Such unrestrained adoration can be dangerous.
Task 1
Step 2. How does Johnny’s admiration for Dallas place him in danger?
Step 3. Explain how the idea of hero worship might relate to the poems “Ozymandius” and “Nothing Gold Can Stay”.
Step 1.

Task 1
ReplyDeleteStep 1
Before placing your heroes on a pedestal and asking them to save your world, you should realize that sometimes, you will be disappointed with the results. What if your hero needs a hero to save them? What if your hero is a fake? What if they aren’t strong enough? Heroes are people too, and sometimes you cannot depend entirely on them. Heroes cannot do everything that people need them to. It is not a perfect world, and modern heroes are people that have families, commitments, dentist appointments, and yes, even problems. In the long, run, heroes are people just like you, and by placing them on the pedestal, you are hurting them. They will get used to hero worship, and they will forget themselves. They will become someone they are not, and that is potentially dangerous. Remember, heroes are just people, and they have a life.
Step 2
Johnny’s admiration for Dally puts both of the boys in danger. Johnny loves Dally like a brother, and many people hate Dally. They may try to hurt Johnny to get back at Dally. Also, Dally is not exactly the best role model. He talks dirtily, he beats up children, he is a bully, and he doesn’t work or appreciate work. However, he is loyal and can refrain from the worst crimes. If Johnny starts to do things that Dally does, he won’t be Johnny anymore, and he may start making people mad. He won’t be the gang’s pet anymore, so he will lose that valuable protection. Dally is in danger of people using Johnny as leverage against him, and of Johnny forgetting the worship, and turning on him. Johnny is definitely in more danger here, as there are more places for him to go wrong.
Step 3
The idea of hero worship is present throughout the two poems “Ozymandias” and “Nothing Gold Can Stay”. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” holds the idea along with its main theme that all good things must end. Heroes fit under the “Gold” category, which means that they cannot stay forever, and they will eventually have to leave you alone. You cannot place all of your life on top of the reassurance of a hero. They will not always be there, and you’ve got to be prepared for the day when they disappear. “Ozymandias” centers around a king- a hero- that ended up with nothing, crumbling and broken in the middle of nowhere. Nobody has ever heard of him. This hero was placed on the pedestal and asked to save the people, and he failed. The people who worshipped him and believed in him probably died. He told us to look upon his city, and despair because we will never be that great. He has nothing, his entire empire is in shambles. This is what happens to the heroes that cannot stand up without their protective base of worshippers. The heroes that do not make it depended too heavily on their people, then flickered and went up in smoke when they were told to stand.

I think that placing heroes on pedestals is a bad idea. This is because if someone's worship for another goes to far, they can do things like sacrifice themselves for their “hero”. This can result in grief for the hero as well, knowing that the worshipper died because of them, can commit suicide, and then everything goes downward from there.
ReplyDeleteJimmy's hero worship for Dally places him in a state of danger because it can cause him to do things like Dally. If Johnny goes around acting like Dally, then he could get himself arrested or even killed.
It could also put Johnny in a place of danger because it could lead him to think like Dally, which wouldn't be good.
I think the idea of hero worship could relate to the poems “Ozymandias” and “Nothing Gold Can Stay” because they all share the same idea: nothing good lasts forever. Ozymandias was a man who had everything, but it ended at the same time as his life. In the Poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, the leaves eventually go away. The hero worship idea is quite the same. You can think the hero you worship is everything, but he will always go away, no matter what.
I chose Muhammad Ali because of he's one of the fifteen on the list that I've actually heard of. I also like all the smart remarks he made (eg. "It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am." and "I float like a butterfly, I sting like a bee." and also "he can't be champ-he's too ugly to be champ!"
ReplyDeleteMuhammad Ali was born as Cassius Clay in January 17th 1942. One day in his home town of Louisiana, Kentucky, his bike was stolen. He told a police officer that he wanted to punch the guy who stole it. The officer suggested that he back up his 'fighting words' by learning to box. The police officer, Joe Martin, who was also a boxing coach, began to teach young Cassius to box. However, unbeknownst to Martin, Cassius was also being trained at the same time by Fred Stoner. Now he was making 4$ a week on a weekly TV show on boxing hosted by Martin, while benefiting also from Fred's knowledge. Cassius became so skilled at the sport that in his entire amateur career of 105 matches he was only defeated five times in his . He went on to win six Kentucky Golden Gloves, an Amateur Athletic Union National Title and a gold medal as a light heavyweight boxer in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Muhammed states in his autobiography that he threw his gold medal into the Ohio river after being refused service at a 'whites only' restaurant and fighting a white gang.
Then Ali began his professional career. Between the years 1960 and 1963 he racked up a score of 19 wins and 0 losses, with 15 knockouts. He also earned a reputation by boasting and correctly predicting which round he would 'finish' his opponent in. He defeated all of the best heavyweight boxers in his era, which was considered to be the 'golden age' of boxing. He defeated Joe Frazier, George Foreman and others. His fight with Frazier was known as the 'Thrilla in Manilla' due to Muhammad's quote that it would be a "Killa, a chilla and a thrilla, when I get that gorilla in Manilla."
His fight with George Foreman was also notable. The 'Rumble in the Jungle' is considered to be the fight that sparked his Parkinson's syndrome. His plan was, instead of his usual "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.' was the "Rope a' Dope." In case you have no idea what I'm talking about, instead of using his speed to get away from Foreman, he leaned against the ropes of the ring and then came in close to George, taking hits without so much as a grunt. He then hit Foreman in the head with stinging shots. Although Ali verbally taunted Foreman in the match, they grew to become best friends.
After finally retiring, Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's syndrome. The disease caused him to slur his words and his reflexes were slowed. However, he continues to fight the disease to day, just as he once fought Joe Frazier. He now has devoted his life to humanitarian endeavours around the globe. He has had four wives and seven daughters and two sons. He has officially been beaten 5 times.

Step I:
ReplyDeleteWhen you place a hero on the pedestal it can be disappointing for two reasons. Firstly, a hero can be anyone. It could be a relative or a friend or even someone you haven’t even met before. These ‘heroes’ do not live to fulfill dreams. Consequently, if they don’t live up to one’s expectations then they could unintentionally shatter that person’s hope, confidence and happiness. This would be very disappointing for the person. Secondly, when you put too much confidence, reliance and dependence on someone’s actions then they might give up on supporting you. One day, when they are no longer there to help you along, you might be mad, scared or uneasy but mostly you will be disappointed.
Step II:
Johnny’s admiration for Dally could place him in emotional danger for the future. When you get really attached to something and treat it as your role model, you start to rely on it and love it. This is how Johnny acts towards Dally. If anything ever happened to Dally, Johnny would have no one to look up to and would feel very small and helpless. Johnny would be stuck because he has never had to make any major decisions for himself, he has just copied Dally. It is better to have confidence and composure of your own than to always have to have someone (like Dally) in front of you to lead the way through life. Therefore, Johnny could be in danger because of the way he relies on Dally’s actions to make his own.
Step III:
The idea of worshipping heroes is present in the poems ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’ and ‘Ozymandias’. The theme of these two poems is that good, powerful and happy things can’t stay the same forever and will eventually be gone. Heroes bring goodness, power and happiness into normal people’s lives. These people know that they aren’t as amazing as their heroes and start to depend on what the hero does when they need to make decisions. A hero is one of the good things that won’t last forever (like in the poems). When good things are gone it is usually sad, and it will be sad when a person’s hero is gone. It is true, ‘Nothing Gold... (like the heroes in our lives) ...Can Stay’.
-Sophia
Heroes are supposed to be out trying to help the world, not preserved in statues or retired in Miami. Real heroes do what they do to for fame glory or a cool-looking statue of themselves, they do it to fight for certain rights, a race, a gender, a religion or other things that they believe is right. This is demonstrated in the poem 'Ozymandias'. Ozymandias states on his statue that he is the greatest king of kings ever and that what he has done is amazing. Apart from his broken statue, however, nothing seems to really have happened. He has been forgotten because, despite his testifying to the contrary, he didn't really get anything done. Even if Ozymandias was a real hero, then he could take a few pages from the Anakin Skywalker Book of Wisdom and remember that: "Actually, the mark of a true Jedi is humility." this Clone Wars quotation also applies to heroes that are not Jedi Knights. This shows that placing heroes on pedestals is simply a waste of time, space and good rock.

Step One:
ReplyDeletePlacing heroes on pedestals may eventually result in a disappointment. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, if you idolize somebody, in due course they may act in certain ways that you do not appreciate or consider appropriate. Your “hero” cannot live up to your expectations. Nobody can please you all the time. At some point, your hero will need to do what they think is right, not what you think is right. Secondly, you need to realize that heroes are people just like us. Even if your hero is an imaginary character, you need to realize that they have problems and insecurities too. Their faults may not be mentioned or glimpsed, but you still need to know that they are there. If you believe that your hero is or needs to be perfect, than unfortunately, you are incorrect. Nobody is perfect. Everybody has their own problems, those problems may just be hidden.
Step Two:
Johnny’s adoration and idolization or Dally is putting him in danger. Dally is really tough on the outside. If he is sad, angry or happy he is rough. He is selfish and disobeys the law. If Johnny continues to worship Dally the way he is now, then he may pick up on Dally’s bad habits. Johnny may become familiar with these habits if he does not stop looking up to Dally. These habits are extremely dreadful and have gotten Dally in trouble with the “fuzz”. Johnny may be the one in jail or the one losing peoples’ trust if this worship continues. Also, Johnny is the gang’s pet. If he loses their trust he will have nobody to turn to but Dally, and that could result in disastrous incidents. In conclusion, Dally is not a very good role model and Johnny’s admiration of him may cause a devastating future for him.
Step Three:
The idea of hero worship is contained in the two poems Nothing Gold Can Stay and Ozymandias. In Nothing Gold Can Stay, the theme of the poem is that nothing good can stay forever. Heroes are always represented as people with good qualities. The good in the poem is represented as gold, so the ‘gold’ (heroes) cannot last. At some point, your hero will disappear from your life and you will be by yourself. If you depend on and worship your hero and they disappear, then you may not know what to do. In other words, don’t always depend on someone because they cannot last forever. In Ozymandias, the theme of the poem is that eventually important people can become worthless and forgotten. Everybody’s hero is special. However, eventually your hero may seem useless to you.. “Ozymandias” was a king that people depended on. When he disappeared, future people forgot about him. If you worship your hero, then eventually you may forget about him/ her because they did not impact your life a whole lot. In conclusion, both poems relate to hero worship.

Many people have been announced to be heroes. I chose John Lennon as my hero. John Lennon was one of the singers in the world famous band, “The Beatles.” I remember the first song I heard the Beatles sing. It was “Imagine”, which was sung and written by John Lennon himself. To this day, I still remember him by that song.
ReplyDeleteJohn Lennon was born during a German bombing raid over Liverpool in October 1940. His parents, Fred and Julia Lennon got a divorce, so John left to go and live with his aunt. He lost contact with his parents during his childhood. John was a very intelligent child, and would have been the top of his class, however, it is said that school did not suit him. For his entire school life, he failed most everything. When he was fourteen he formed a small band with a few friends. He was the lead vocalist. Soon after, he was introduced to young Paul McCartney and soon their band became “The Beatles”.
Mr. Lennon accomplished many things in his short life, including the writing of two poetry books, belonging to one of the greatest bands of all time (The Beatles), and becoming a peace- activist. He protested against wars, such as the Vietnam War, he was against racism in all forms, and he was especially against hatred of fellow men. He was a great dad to his son, and he was heading home to say goodnight when he was assassinated. John did not only protest, but he did something to make the world, in his mind, better for everyone. He wrote songs about fairness, and love, and peace. Just listen to “Imagine”. He wrote it to send a memorandum to the people, and this anthem has passed the tests of time, and even after Mr. Lennon passed on, he is still remembered today.
John Lennon is considered a hero in my mind and in the minds of others because he promoted peace and love, and he tried his hardest to make people see that racism and war were wrong, and man should all be one. He didn’t care what people said, and he always kept his mind on what he wanted to achieve. As well as doing all of that, he topped it all off by inspiring people. People just like you and I, to go out and be nice, to go out and mend problems, and to go out and sing. He got his message out not by emails, or letters, but by singing, and encouraging others to sing his songs. Every time he sang about peace, and somebody else realized that killing and hurting people is wrong, then he became a hero again.
John Lennon has inspired me to persuade people around me to live life peacefully. He has inspired me to come into a room full of people, all of whom think that my ideas are wrong, and that I’m being stupid, and laugh in their faces. I have been inspired to dream, and to be a more peaceful, contributing member of our community. I have been inspired to sing. I have been inspired to put my name on this piece of writing, even though I may be made fun of for it. I want to be like John Lennon, I want to be remembered as someone who dreamed about peace, and who made it happen.

Task One:
ReplyDeleteStep One:
Once we place heroes on pedestals, we begin to consider those people to be role models and fantastic individuals. Sometimes however, following these people without careful consideration can lead you to a dead end. People may love and admire heroes but some of the time the outcome is disappointing. Heroes may look and sound tough or amazing but those heroes usually end up in trouble. When looking at true heroes and role models you should look at all their qualities, and then decide whether they have the characteristics of a hero.
Step Two:
Johnny’s admiration for Dallas can lead him to danger. Dallas is showing Johnny that it’s okay to not have the 4 C’s which are cared for, contributing, capable and. Dallas has no one that cares for him, no place to live, no contributions towards the community, no understanding of what he is capable of and is always off getting into trouble. This is dangerous for Johnny because it could influence him to do things like Dally and act like him. I think that Johnny has much more potential than Dally and he can learn to progress in the right direction.
Step Three:
The idea of heroes and worship can be developed in the two poems Ozymandias and Nothing Gold Can Stay. Heroes and worship are mentioned in Ozymandias when the poet refers to the King who said he was a hero and then crumbled into dust. These things are also shown in the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay when the poet describes how all good things come to end, even if you a fantastic and heroic individual there are no exceptions in the life cycle. Heroes and worship is virtually thought of everyday by everyone.
Natalie
Johnny's worship of Dallas places him in danger because Johnny tries to imitate Dally, who is not a good role model. If Johnny continues to copy Dally's bad habits (although Johnny only seems to notice Dally's good qualities), then he will end up just like Dally-a young criminal who gets into fights . This is demonstrated in chapter five when Johnny talks about Dally's gallantry and relates him to the Southern gentlemen in "Gone With the Wind" (I can't underline schtuphon this blog!). Obviously Johnny so far fails to see Dallas in a more mature way.

The idea of hero worship is evident both in the poem 'Nothing Gold Can Stay' and 'Ozymandias'. Ozymandias used to be worshipped as a feared king of kings who said he was the greatest, but he couldn't stay 'gold' for long. People soon figured out that he wasn't really all that and he soon became a forgotten, decaying statue.

Task 3
ReplyDeleteWhat John Lennon has done relates to the novel because he fought as hard as he could for people to love each other, and not be against each other, and the Socs and the Greasers are against each other to the fullest extent. Mr. Lennon taught people live in peace, and to respect your fellow human beings. If the boys in The Outsiders would learn to do just that, then nobody would have ever been hurt, Johnny would be in a family that loved him, Ponyboy could walk home from the movies without being cut up, and everybody’s lives would be that much better. Lacking in harmony, the Greasers and the Socs will eventually grow to hate each other even more, until their hate game turns into a full- out war.

I chose Martin Luther King Jr. because of the major impact that he has made on the U.S.A when there was segregation, and isolation between the two races.
ReplyDeleteMichael (Martin) Luther King Jr. was born January 15th 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin graduated from High School at age 15, and when he was 19 he graduated from college. He went on to be a Baptist and receive his doctorate from Boston University. In 1953, Martin married Coretta Scott and had 4 children named Yolanda, Martin, Dexter, and Bernice. When Martin was in the church as a Baptist minister, he advocated non-violence and passive resistance to the black people in his community.
On December 1 1955, Rosa Parks, refused to give up her seat to a white man on the bus (it was the law that if asked, the person was to be removed, and sit at the back of the bus.). This caused a riot which started boycotts on buses, putting Martin in jail, and having his family's house almost blown to pieces by a bomb. His black supporters came to his aid and threatened to bring weapons to end the conspiracy against them. Martin cast them down and said the strongest man is the one who won't fight back. This was broadcast everywhere, and soon after Martin recruited white followers as well as black.
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968 while he was standing outside his balcony. His death enraged many of the black followers, having them take to the streets with weapons, ready for violence. Martin Luther King Jr. inspired millions whether black or white. His legacy has been strong and important enough to last this long and I believe that it will last long enough to teach the children of the future. This wonderful man can inspire me because of his ways of keeping the peace, using leadership effectively, and his ways of keeping calm and using passive ways to deal with conflict.
Tea
Martin Luther King Jr kept the peace between the two races during the segregation. His acts of peace making and keeping can relate to the book "The Outsiders". This is because if Ponyboy was more responsible, he wouldn't have caused Darry to slap him, causing him to run away. Martin Luther King was against using weapons in a forcible manner. If Johnny heard Martin's broadcast after his house was bombed, he might of left his switchblade at home, where he might have a loving family who was always looking out for him. Dally, might rise up and smarten up, and learn that he needs to get his act together.

Step1
Placing heroes in pedestals can be disappointing when your hero let's you down and isn't as tough or as strong as you thought they were. Heroes are just normal people like us and you can put too much pressure on them and depend on them. After a while your hero might not seem as tough as you thought they were and you might not look up to them anymore. Sometimes your hero might make a mistake that will make you dislike them.
Step 2
Johnny looks up to Dally and he wants to be just like him because he thinks he's tough and cool, but when he finds out he is going to be disappointed. He also wants to follow Dally. Dally isn't a true hero. He just acts tough. In chapter 6, when Johnny and Ponyboy save those kids from the burning church, he tells them to forget the kids and come out. This tells us that Dally doesn't care about other peoples' lives. Dally doesn't go in their himself either. This tells us that he isn't as tough as everyone thinks he is.
Step 3
I think the Poem "Ozymandius" and "Nothing Gold Can Stay" relate to the her warship in "The Outsiders." In the poem "Ozymandius," there is a king who considers himself to be the king of all kings and everyone feared and warships him. One day everyone forgot him and stopped caring about him. This will happen to every hero one day. They will be forgotten. The poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay," says that no good things last forever and heroes won't last forever either. One day Johnny will find out that Dally isn't what he thought he was this whole time.

Step 1
Civil and political rights:
These rights include rights to live, liberty and security of the individual; freedom from torture and slavery; political participation; freedom of opinion, expression, thought conscience and religion; freedom of association and assembly. Martin Luther King was this type of hero. These heroes are freedom fighters.
Economic and social rights:
These are "security-oriented" rights, for example the rights to work and education; a reasonable standard of living; food; shelter and health care. Edith Abbott and Fred Hollows fought for these rights.
Environmental, cultural and development rights:
These include the rights to live in an environment that is clean and protected from destruction, and rights to cultural, political and economic development. When we say that each person has human rights, we are also saying that each person has responsibilities to respect the human rights of others. People such as Jacques Cousteau, Rachel Carson, and Ian Kernian are heroes that fought for these rights, not only for themselves, for all of us.
Trailblazers:
The great writers, artists, scientists and explorers who have sacrificed much in their own lives to achieve not only their personal bests, but a sense of pride for their nation and even gender.
Michael Jordan was born February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. As a child he was never a very good athlete, in fact he was cut his freshman year of high school basketball and didn’t even make varsity as a sophmore. However Jordan’s tremendous work ethic lead to his greatness. He played, and practiced a lot. As a 5’ 10” freshman in high school, Jordan shot up to be 6’ 6” by his freshman year in college. His father said he probably willed himself to grow. After college the rest is history.
ReplyDeleteHe can inspire people to practice and practice until they reach their goal and if you fail keep practicing some more until you accomplish your goal. Michael Jordan made donated a lot of his money to charity, which is heroic and inspires others to do the same as well

His basketball accomplishments include: a 1982 college championship with North Carolina University, the gold medal in the 1984 Olympic game, 1985 NBA Rookie of the year, named NBA MVP five times (1988,1991,1992,1996,1998), and six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. He also fulfilled his father's dream of him playing In MLB.
He is considered heroic because he practiced and practiced to become good at basketball after he got cut of the team and made it to the NBA. After he made it to NBA his father died and he wanted to fulfill his father's dream of playing in the MLB.
Step 3
ReplyDeleteMichael Jordan wasn't a good athlete at all. He got kicked off his basketball team in university. He didn't give up. He kept on practicing and practicing and made it to the NBA. In the novel "The Outsiders," Johnny and Ponyboy are just Greasers and murderers. When they see the church burning down they went to rescue the kids. They recsued a couple and Dally told them to come out, but they didn't give up. Even though the church was burning down and bout to collapse, they didn't give up.

Civil and political rights:
These heroes fight against things like slavery, the rights of life, freedom of speech, opinion, thought, religion and more.
Economic and social rights:
These people try to enforce rights for education, a reasonable standard of living: such as food, shelter and health care.
Environmental, cultural and development rights:
These heroes focus on the rights of living in an environment that is clean, safe, protected, and healthy; they also focus on cultural rights and political or economical development.

Hero: Neil Armstrong
Early Years:
Neil Armstrong was born in Ohio on August 5th 1930. When Neil was young he always loved to fly, he learned how to fly an aeroplane before he thought about driving a car. Neil was hardworking was rewarded by a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering at Purdue University.
Accomplishments:
Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon. He received many science degrees and is know for the famous line of “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
How Neil can be considered heroic:
Neil Armstrong is considered heroic because of his leadership skills, bravery, intelligence and for his many accomplishments.
How Neil can influence me:
Neil Armstrong can influence me by pursuing my dreams and working hard when I want to achieve a goal. He is brave and an accomplished leader.
Step Three:
Neil Armstrong’s attributes and accomplishments can relate to the novel The Outsiders. Ponyboy and Johnny become heroes in chapter six because they save some children from a fire and show bravery, courage and leadership. Neil Armstrong can relate to these boys because he became a hero after he showed that he was brave, intelligent and hardworking. Neil Armstrong was recognized greatly for his accomplishments and I hope later on, Ponyboy and Johnny will be recognized too.

Task 1
ReplyDeleteStep 1
When you place a hero on top of a pedestal it may be disappointing. A hero can be anyone around you it can be a relative, sport player and even a person on television. A human is only a human they cannot have super powers to do everything right. When your human hero is under pressure it is very hard to make a decision. Nobody’s perfect and everyone makes mistakes and from there mistake they can sabotage their image buy making a bad decision.
Step 2
Dally is not a good role model and this puts Jonny in danger because Dally does not use the 4 C’s. When Dally ignores the 4 C’s that makes him not a good role model Jonny needs a better role model that has the 4 C’s. Everyone needs a good role model and Dally is not a good role model for anyone. Also Jonny can’t follow a role model that cusses and does stuff against the wall.
Step 3
The poems Ozymandius and Nothing Gold Can Stay relate to the idea of being a hero worshiped. They both have the idea of a hero being worshiped because in the poem Ozymandius the hero or wanted to e hero was forgotten and no one had ever spoken of his. In the poem nothing Gold Can Stay the hero can be the beautiful sunset and the hero will always go away. People will always forget and also people will go away no one can live forever.
Task 2
Step 2
Heroes aren’t always a super hero they are mostly human beings
Heroes are people who have individuality
Heroes are people we can look up to
These attributes are related to the 4 groups because these groups are all together
Amelia Earhart was born July 2. Amelia began to fly when she was at the age of 24. Her greatest accomplishment was the very first women to fly across the Atlantic. She was considered historic because it was only surpassed by the power of her heart and she gave a lot. She was also determined to circumnavigate around the globe. Amelia can inspire me because we can try new things and not to be afraid of trying new things. Amelia was also a very brave woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Step 3
Amelia Earhart’s accomplishment relates to The Outsiders because Ponyboy has a big heart and so does Amelia this is what she was known for. Ponyboy can feel things that other people in their crew can’t feel he actually cries and the others boys don’t they hold it in or do not show any emotion. In the book The Outsiders Ponyboy has adventure by reading Gone With the Wind and Amelia has her adventure through her adventures around the world and she is experiencing them.

Task 1
ReplyDeleteWhen we describe things to be better than they are, we can become disappointed with reality. For example, if we are told how amazing an experience is, and it turns out to be nothing more than a dull, unimaginative event, we will feel let down and dissatisfied. This is the same will leaders and heroes. When we expect greatness and have high standards, all respect can be lost after a minor situation that leaves the so-called hero in an unfavourable situation.
In The Outsiders, Johnny may have difficulty later on in life if he continues to see Dallas as a hero and role model because he may imitate Dally’s actions. Dallas has bad habits, and if Johnny mimics those he will damage his health. Dallas also lashes out, and steals as he pleases. If Johnny loses his artistic, emotional side, and becomes crude and irritable he may end up in prison, or worse the electric chair.
In the poem ‘Ozymandias’, the second speaker explains how his power is gone, and in ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’, the speaker is explaining how at first everything may seem great, but overtime the lustre will become dull. These poems relate to hero worship because they both explain that in life, what may seem amazing and respect-worthy, is actually not a good influence. They both also shows that at first we see everything as amazing, and eventually we come to realize that no glory will last.
Task 2
Civil and Political Rights
Martin Luther King is an example of somebody who fought for civil and political rights. He believed in liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion, expression, political participation and religion.
Economic and Social Rights
People who fought for economic and social rights were Edith Abbott and Fred Hollows. They fought for people to have the right to work, have an education, and have a standard of living (food, shelter, and health care).
Environmental, Cultural and Developmental Rights
These types of heroes fought for the rights of living in a clean and safe environment, and the rights for political, economic and cultural development. They worked to make the future a better place, and expected people to take the responsibility of respecting one another. Examples of these people are Jacques Cousteau, Rachel Carson and Ian Kernian.
Trailblazers
Trailblazers are usually writers, scientists, artists, or explorers who sacrifice greatly to achieve pride for their nation or gender. Examples of these people are John Lennon – a musician who campaigned for peace and human rights, and Cathy Freeman – an athlete who became an ambassador for aboriginal rights.
Amelia Earhart
Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. She began to fly at the age of 24, and before that she served as a nurse’s aid in World War I. Although during that time women and men were not seen as equals, she still chose to lead a brave, audacious life.
In 1928, Amelia became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Although she didn’t pilot the plane, this was a big step in her life. After her trip, she began to travel the country as a very popular speaker, giving lectures to clubs, organizations, and colleges. Later on in 1932, Amelia became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1935 she became the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean.
Amelia soon decided to circumnavigate the globe along the equator. It would be the longest global flight in history– an astounding 29,000 miles. The trip was planned into sections so she could stop for fuel and rest. Her aircraft was damaged during her first attempt in March 1937. On May 20, 1937 she tried again with Fred Noonan. They flew three quarters of the trip with only about 7,000 miles remaining, all over the Pacific Ocean. On July 2, 1937 they took off from Lae, New Guinea. When Amelia Earhart made radio contact twenty four hours after takeoff, she was unsure of her position, but she knew she was near the Howland Islands. They were never heard from again, and they disappeared without a trace. Japanese and American searches found no evidence of them either. Her disappearance still confuses experts, but researchers and her family generally believe that her plane ran out of fuel and she and Noonan died at sea.
Amelia can be seen as heroic because she broke the stereotypical mould of women in the 1920’s and 30’s. By doing this, she was an inspiration to women to follow their own path, and be who they wanted to be. She also proved that she never gave up, because when Amelia first started travelling, she was a passenger, and she made sure she fulfilled her goals, and she eventually became the pilot.
Amelia can inspire me to never give up or accept unfairness. By her actions of proving herself to the world, she showed everyone what a young woman could do. By following her morals and ethics, I can become a self-assured person who tries hard to achieve success, and works to reach my goals.
Amelia Earhart proved to people that women could accomplish amazing feats of courage, and broke free from the stereotypes of her time. In the novel The Outsiders, there are a lot of stereotypes. Anybody living one side is a ‘Soc’, and on the other is a ‘Greaser’. When we have these ideas that everybody from one path of life is the same, we can underestimate and overestimate their potential. For example, ‘Greasers’ are expected to be violent and illiterate, but Ponyboy is artistic, emotional and intelligent. If the characters in the novel accepted that not everyone in the same ‘gang’ had the same intentions, people would have had a better life. Ponyboy would not be worried about being teased for being smart, and other ‘Greasers’ would not automatically be seen as hoodlums and delinquents. As you can see, the boys in the novel would benefit greatly by following Amelia’s inspiring actions.

Placing heroes on pedestals is disappointing in the long run because in the end you realize that person isn’t as great as you think they are, they are just like every other person. This is shown when dally doesn’t act like a hero, “ for Pete’s sake, get outa there! That roofs gonna cave in any minute, just leave those blasted kids”(page 93) this is when they go back to the church to find that it was on fire. Dally being one of the oldest and most admired by Johnny didn’t even go to save the children in the fire whilst Ponyboy and Johnny did. This shows that Dally isn’t all he was supposedly admired for, being strong and audacious, because he didn’t even attempt to save the children but clearly cared for Johnny as he went in and saved him when he couldn’t make it through the window.
ReplyDeleteJohnny’s admiration for Dallas puts him in danger because Johnny might want to do exactly the same things as he did, ignore the law and go to jail. Even Dally said that he didn’t want Johnny to follow him too much, “ you get hardened in jail. I don’t want that to happen to you like it happened to me….” (page 90) this was when Johnny was thinking about turning himself in when Dally said that when he went to jail he was toughened and he didn’t want Johnny to toughen like he did. Although dally is caring, of which he could be admired for, he's not exactly on the right path to being a successful person, he has no career, no education and is constantly disobeying the law.
Hero worship relates to “Ozymandias” and “nothing gold can stay” as it is like thinking someone is so golden and great and after a while you see who that person really is. This is shown in “ nothing gold can stay”,“ natures first green is gold” and is also shown in “Ozymandias” when, “and on the pedestal these words appear: “ My name is Ozymandias, king of kings; look on my works, ye mighty and despair!”” in both poems there was a hero and in the beginning that person was the one that every person was inspired by and wanted to be like until they realized that that person wasn’t as great as they thought.
Mahatma Ghandi is in the environmental, cultural and development rights category of heroes. This category of rights means includes the rights to live in an environment that is clean and protected form destruction, and rights to cultural, political and economic development. This category has probably seen the most activists in the last ten years.
Mahatma Ghandi was born in a small state of India and his father was chief minister. They had little money and scraped together hat they could to follow through with their traditions. He married at the age of thirteen and went to study law at the Inns Court of London with the money he had carefully saved.
In London he was a leading member of the vegetarian movement, as well as having the belief of not eating meat the group also believed in minimalism and the simple life. He practised law successfully in South Africa from 1963.despite his occupation and educations he was once thrown of a train just for being Indian. He wouldn’t leave so they therefore threw him off of the train and this was what inspired him to start thinking about changing racial discrimination.
He is considered heroic because he got India their independence from the British and believed in non-violent alternatives to fighting and had no hatred for others or racial discrimination. He didn’t give up and I’m sure that a lot of people admire him and are inspired by him to do better in life and be a better person.
He inspires me because everyone could do with a bit more peace in their lives country battles and everyday life. His story also teaches you that not everyone will want to follow your beliefs and the way you live but you just have to keep on trying to persuade people just that little bit more. He believes in love and truth and I could use that more often in my life as well others who can use it in their lives.
Mahatma is like Johnny and Ponyboy when they went inside the burning church to get the children that were caught inside. They are the heroes of the moment and aren’t going to be forgotten about. It is like Ghandi’s self sacrifice he is willing to die trying to save someone else’s life just like Johnny and Ponyboy. Even Dallas has a little bit of kindness in him, he cares for Johnny a lot as he went in the burning church to get Johnny when he collapsed in side. Usually dally is the one causing the trouble but just at that moment he revealed the kindness and care inside of him.

Wayne Gretzky was born on January 26TH 1961, in Brantford Ontario. He grew up around hockey and played minor hockey many levels above him (when he was supposed to be in Pee Wee, he played Bantam). His father was very influential to him as he grew up. When he and his dad watched hockey, his dad told him to follow and read the play and position of the puck on a piece of paper. Despite his weakness in strength, speed and age Wayne was able to play wonderful hockey by reading plays and making smart decisions.
ReplyDeleteIn 1978 Gretzky signed with the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA (World Hockey Association). Quickly after signing with the Racers, Gretzky signed with the Edmonton Oilers and led them to four Stanley Cups with Mark Messier. After nine seasons with Edmonton, he moved to L.A. to play for the Las Angeles Kings. Playing six full seasons with them and leading them to an appearance in the Stanley cup finals, Gretzky was traded to ST. Louis briefly and then quickly moved to New York to play for the Rangers. In his career, Gretzky captured nine Hart Trophies as the most valuable player, ten Art Ross Trophies for most points in a season, five Lady Byng Trophies for sportsmanship and performance, five Lester B. Pearson Awards, and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP.
People all around the world can aspire to be or to be like Wayne Gretzky because he has shaped the hockey world into a better place. He has had some great moments, like some sick dangles and some sick top-shelfers and four Stanley Cups. He has inspired the world to keep on thriving to be great at what you love.
Gretzky is a ‘trailblazer’ type of hero. He has shaped the way for many other hockey greats and is a legend of his time. I can relate him to our novel in no way. No one in the novel ever talks about hockey or any hockey legends and a he has no relevance to anyone in the novel ‘the outsiders’.
