Chapter 2

During Chapter 2 Ponyboy describes his interactions with his peer group. He describes himself as he "...chased two junior-high kids across a field for a few minutes" (pg 20), and later relates Dally's efforts to bully Cherry Valance. Clearly, bullies play a large role in Ponyboy's social environment.

I have learned many things about bullying by reading the selected websites. One of the most important things I learned about bullying is that you have to look and feel confident to get rid of a bully. You are harder to pick on if you stand up and be strong. Another important thing I learned is that if you don’t show your feelings, then the bully will most likely give up and walk away. Bullies are just looking for a reaction. The third thing I learned is that no matter what, you must tell an adult, otherwise your problem will get larger. Two more things you can do to stay bully- free are staying together with a group, and never bully back. By bullying back, you tell the bully that you think that hitting and calling names is something you find perfectly acceptable. If you stay in a group, you are harder to single out.

The role of bullies in The Outsiders is a very pronounced one. Dally would definitely be classified as a bully. Johnny’s dad is a bully to Johnny. Ponyboy bullied the younger kids. Darry may have bullied Ponyboy, in the loose term of the word. The Socs are some of the rougher, meaner bullies. They almost killed Johnny, and they hurt Ponyboy. Dally is motivated by two things. The first is his peers, who encourage him a bit too much. Secondly, he beats some people up to get things he wants, for example, the ring. We don’t know much about Johnny’s dad, but he is probably motivated either by being drunk, or extreme hatred. Ponyboy was motivated to scare the little kids because his friends were with him, and he was bored. Most of the Socs are motivated by trying to be popular, and by their hate of the Greasers. Cherry reacted to Dally’s dirty talking by telling him to stop and then ignoring him. Johnny doesn’t let out a whimper, even when his dad beats him with a two- by- four. The Greasers get the Socs back by throwing rocks at their cars, and by beating up the ones that hurt them. I think that the bullies in the story will get caught, by the authorities or by their conscience.

  2. I really liked Mary's comments about how Dally is motivated by his peers. I also like how her first paragraph about bullies flows very smoothly and gives you a thorough understanding of bullies in such a short precis. The way that she covers all the content is very good too! She also followed the guidelines very well and made it an enjoyable read. -Sophia

  3. In the readings, I learned many things about bullying and bullies. Bullying is something that happens everywhere and kids can be seriously harmed by it. The stress of bullying makes kids feel bad and even sick. Bullies make everyone fearful, not just the individuals that they pick on. Fortunately, there are beneficial ways to handle the torture of being bullied. Firstly you have to remember not to let your feelings show and not to fight back. If you get upset over a bully, you are rewarding them. They want to know that they have power and that they create fear. If you bully them back you are just being as much a bully as the other person. In the end, despite how mean a bully is, they usually end up as just a normal kid in enormous trouble. Some bullies will learn to be good kids but others won’t for varied reasons. They are just human after all.
In our novel we have met many characters who are bullies and characters who have been bullied. The main group of bullies are the Socs. The Socs think that they are better than the greasers and that they should have power over them for this reason. They hurt kids physically by using knives, by hitting and by kicking. Everyone who has come in contact with them is very fearful of them, however it is apparent that if you stay in a large group, the Socs will not be able to keep torturing you because they are outnumbered. I think that later in the novel the Socs will see that they are not on top of the world and turn out to be good kids.
Other people in “the gang” do less harmful bullying. Ponyboy was chasing kids (a minor form of bullying) but I think it was because he is unstable sometimes and is often exposed to this kind of behaviour from people like Dally. Dally uses verbal bullying more than physical bullying. Because he is not a high-class citizen, people might find it easier to sand up to him (like Cherry did) rather than the Socs. I predict that sometime in the novel, the greasers will turn out to be more accepted and they won’t bully anymore.

  4. Because of several helpful websites I have learned a great amount of information about bullying. I have learned that bullies pick on people who feel alone or cannot stand up for themselves. In other words be strong and stick up for yourself. I also learned that you should never bully a bully back because then you are just getting them more satisfied and being a bully yourself. If a teacher caught you bullying back to a person then you could get into just as much trouble. I learned that sometimes when somebody is bullying you it doesn’t mean they are meaning to. Sometimes kids come from harsh families and being a bully is all he/ she know how to behave as. I also learned that talking to an adult about a situation such as bullying can help you feel safer. The adult can help you fix the situation and get the bully to stop. Lastly, I learned that sometimes a bully can turn out to be a really good person inside when he/ she understands that what they are doing is wrong. Sometimes they do not change or they may become your friend. I understand that a bully’s behaviour can be stopped or changed and all I have to do is be able to handle a bully properly.
In The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, bullies and bullying play a big role. In the novel, there are 2 sorts of cliques. The “Greasers” and the “Socials.” They both are completely against each other and they bully people who aren’t in their group. Both groups (mostly the Socs though) physically hurt each other. I believe that Dally is a bully because he swears at Socs and other kids and he doesn’t show people respect. When Ponyboy, Johnny and Dally go to the drive-in and see 2 girls who are Socials Dally is rude and inconsiderate about the girls’ feelings.Eventually he leaves because Johnny stands up for the girls. Besides Dally, some of the Socs are bullies because they do believe that they are better than the Greasers. They physically hurt Greasers and live as if they are higher than them. Also they are motivated because of their friends. Luckily, some characters react in the right way against some of the bullies. For example, Cherry Valance stands up for herself and her friend Marcia when Dally begins his crude behaviour towards them. Also, when it the behaviour goes too far, Johnny sticks up for Cherry and Marcia by telling Dally to stop. Dally’s response is stopping and leaving. I predict that bullies like Dally and the Socs will eventually stop bullying people because their behaviour is stopped by people like Ponyboy and Johnny.

  5. I really enjoyed Mary and Sophia's comments. I enjoyed how Mary's comment talked about how Ponyboy is a bully because to some people he may be considered a good person. Also Ponyboy didn't join Dally in bullying Cherry and Marcia. Mary's comment was very sophisticated and showed me a different perspective of the novel. Sophia's comments are very intellectual and flow smoothly. She showed many great ideas about the novel that I would not have thought of. Therefore both comments show me brilliant and different perspectives/ ideas of The Outsiders.

  6. I really enjoyed Sophia's comment because she used some great rhetorical tools such as good vocabulary terms and various sentence starters. I also liked how she described everyone in the novel that was being bullied or who were bullying, that way we were able to see several sides of the story. In addition, my favourite part of Sophia's comment was when she was describing why bulling is wrong, this section is very descriptive, sophisticated and valuable information.
    Great Job Sophia!

  7. The five most important things that I learned were that bullies make people feel stressed, they make people feel sad, they usually want attention when bullying others, bullying can affect a person’s life greatly and bullying is wrong. These facts are important because if everyone looked at these five reasons about bullying, an anti-bullying zone would appear. Bully’s sometimes do not understand how hurtful their actions and remarks are, but that is no excuse. One main thing a person should do if they see bullying is to stand up and stand by the victim unless the situation looks unsafe, then you must tell a trustworthy adult. The message that all of these articles develop is that bullying is WRONG.

In the novel, thus far, our characters have been exposed to bullying. Some of the bullying that has been taking place is when Dallas picks on Cherry and Marcia, when Ponyboy chases some kids across the field and when we hear about the time when the Soc’s beat Johnny. The only reason why Dallas picks on the girls is because they are Soc’s and wants to take advantage of them. It is the same sort of scenario for Johnny, the Soc’s were only beating him up because he wasn’t their kind, he was a greaser. On the other hand, Ponyboy was only bullying the kids on the field because he believes it is the only way for him to show power. The whole reason for bulling in this novel is for a reputation, everyone wants to look tough. As the novel progresses, I hope the bullying will start to abate.

  8. Bullying is a serious ordeal. I learned many things about bullying from the website but five main topics appealed to me. Firstly, if you stand tall and become brave, the bully has less power over you because you can ignore the bully. Bullies can come from families that fight or argue a lot, and other bullies can just be looking for attention. Being bullied can even make you sick for a while because of the stress from the bully's wrath. Always tell an adult what the bully is doing, and ask how to stop it. Also, hide your emotions. Your emotions are what the bully feeds off of. If the bully gets a big reaction of it, he'll feel better and continue to bully people. Lastly, the number one thing you can do to stop a bully, is to always stay in a group and don't bully back. When staying in a group, you can't be alone and vulnerable, and by bullying back it shows that kicking, and being rude is very tolerable. Bullying is defiantly not O.K. for any child to participate in.

    Téa

In our novel, bullying plays a big role for a strong reputation. An act of bullying happens when Dally starts to bully Cherry and Marcia only because they’re Socs, and the Socs love to use them to the fullest when the a Greaser is jumped. Dally feels this way about any gang of Socs. Ponyboy bullies the younger kids because it gives him a feeling of power. Darry “bullies” Ponyboy because he wants him to graduate and enjoy the education that he never had. Having this happen to Ponyboy puts pressure on himself. Johnny’s dad bullies Johnny (Johnny’s dad battered him on the head with a two-by-four), and the Socs always pick on Johnny because he can’t defend himself. The whole role of bullying is only to look tough in front of you gangs, whether that may be the Socs or the Greasers.

  10. FIVE THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT BULLIES AND BULLYING:

In these tasks I have learned that bullies often bully their peers because they like it when their victim tries to stand up for themselves. They also have a tendency to pick on weaker people or people thy are jealous of. Looking brave when confronted by a bully is very effective. Prevention is better than a cure when it comes to bullying. Being bullied affects one’s performance at school and later in the workplace.

  12. BULLYS IN OUR NOVEL:

I think the entire novel represents a struggle against bullies and also resisting the temptation to bully. The Socs are bullies and Dallas is a bully. I think the Socs bully due to contempt of the greasers. Dallas bullies because he hates the Socs and he dislikes any kind of law. I think Dallas is going to wind up insane and the Socs will just remain Socs.

I liked Jacks comment about Johnny and Ponyboy not really understanding bullying even though the rest of the gang are bullies. That separates them from the rest of the gang. It's an amusing pun-outsiders among outsiders.

  13. The 5 most imporant things i have learned from bullies and the way they react would be that bullies acted mean and hurtfull to people because they are ether having trouble at school or they are insecure. On February 27th people we're pink because of a true story that happened to a new 9th grader. To handle a bully or bullies you should take different approaches like standing up for yourself or telling a teacher. If a bully comes to talk to you ether turn away and leave or stand up for yourself. Lastly you can avode the bully by taking different routes home or stay away from them.

The role of bullies and bullying in our novel thus far is the socials act of jumping Greasers like Ponyboy and Johnny. Another act of bullying is when the socials call the greasers names and swears. Yes, there are bullies in are novel thus far. The bullies thus far are the socials or the rich kids. The bullies or the socials get motivated by there money and their hatred towards the greasers. The characters or the greasers react to the bullies by getting in fights with the socials and starting mobs. I think that when the novel progresses, Ponyboy will reach out to the socials and change their minds about the greasers.

  15. The 5 most important things I learned about bullying:
Bullies usually bully people to feel more imported or powerful. When a kid is being bullied they are to scared to go to school or do other stuff they want to do. It is also harder to concentrate on the school work. Sometimes bullies don't know how hurtful their actions are. Some bullies realize that they don't get the respect that they want. Bullies act this way when they want attention.

  16. The first most important thing I learned was that bullies are just trying to be tougher to other kids because of there own problems. Second of all being bullied can make a kid feel the worst because they can feel hurt embarrassed and so much more. Next, three quarters of all kids in the world will or have been bullied or teased. The thing that kids deal with the most is the stress of being bullied. They are always worrying about when the bully will find them next. The reason kids bully is to get attention because they were never liked and are trying to be popular.

  18. The role of bullying in our novel thus far is on both sides the Socs and the Greasers. For the Socs it is that they jump Greasers. For the Greasers it is Dally in the way he is a major part in bullying in the way he is making rude comments at Cherry Valance.

  20. The 5 most important things I learned about bullying are:
A: Nobody likes a bully. They’re rude. B: IF you get bullied, the best thing to do is stand up for yourself and others. Bullies don’t like it when you do that. C: If that doesn’t work, ignore the bully. He’ll go away. D: Bullies pick on kids that they think are weak. Be a tough individual and carry bully spray. E: Bullying can prevent kids from going to school. If you’re getting bullied make some friends and come to school.

  21. And for my final act:

I think the presence of bullies so far in the novel is quite significant. We have seen Dally bully Cherry Valance, we have seen Ponyboy bully two junior high kids in a field, and we have seen the Socs jump Ponyboy. This tells us that most characters in this book are bullies in some way. These characters are motivated by each other and the power one receives from picking on others. Some characters, like Cherry Valance, stand up for themselves and others against bullies like Dally Winston. Others, like Johnny Cade, cannot stick up for themselves against the Socs and other bullies. I think that as time progresses, something really bad will happen to someone important, as it suggests on the back of the book.

What I learned from this is that when you stand up to bullying the bullies back off. This is proven in the passage when the boy wears a pink t-shirt to school and is made fun of. But two older students don’t put up with this and convince everyone to wear pink the next day to eliminate bullying from the school environment.

  23. 1. Why Bullying is a Big Deal
-75% of all kids say they have been bullied
    -bullying + school = FEAR
    - hard to keep your mind on schoolwork when worried

    2. Why Bullies Act That Way
    -bullies are looking for attention
    -bullies don’t understand feelings
-bullies pick on smarter people than they are

    3. How to Handle Bullies
-don’t give the bully a chance
    -stand tall and be brave
    -ignore the bully

    4. What Happens to Bullies
-bullies blame others for their actions
-bullies can learn to change their behaviour
-some kids think bullying makes them popular

  24. The five most important things I learned about bullying were to never give into the bully. This prevents the bully from bullying you because they don’t like it when you stand up to them. The second thing is that bullies feed off power. The third is to stand up for yourself. The fourth is to try to avoid bullies. If you avoid them you’ll never have to face them. And the last thing is to stay with friends because bullies always pick on individuals.

  27. Bullying is exhibited throughout the outsiders novel, such as when Dally bullies Cherry Valence. I think that he does this because he hasn’t ever been taught better. As greasers in their society, everyone expects them to act that way because that is their nature. On the other hand, the socs are rich slobs who always get what they want and still bully but are still respected in society. The socs bully the greasers because they have nothing better to do.

  29. I have learned that bullies are people that have ether had something do to them or have experienced something that makes hem feel bad so they make others feel bad about them self. Lots of people get bullied and about 1 of 4 people say they have been bullied or made fun of in a time in there life. I found all of this information on a web sit called http://kidshealth.org/kid/grow/school_stuff/bullies.html and http://www2.news.gov.bc.ca/news_releases_2005-2009/2008OTP0041-000246.html I have learned lots from these web sites and the most important thing is that the people that are bully don’t like it and they feel bad when they are made fun of. One other thing that I have learned is that bullies may bee mean but there will always be someone bigger who will beat them up or call them names so be sympathetic even though they weren’t nice to you. As you obviously as you can see there is much to learn from this web site and I have learned from it.

In the book I think that potentially that darry and two bit would be bullies because they are mean to kids and they hurt people. I also think that maybe ponyboy would be a bit of a bully. I think that because it clearly stated that they chased them through the fields and that the boys were only juniors at high school. Lots of the people in this boo look like they could be bullies. I think that the reason they maybe bullies is that lots of people think that they are scum bag and that they have completely surrcumb to there dark feelings. As you can plainly see there are many places that bullies are found in the novel we are reading.

  30. In the novel " The Outsiders," the main bullies are the Socs. The Socs like to jump the Greasers. They also call them Greasers because they are poor and have long greasy hair. Some of the Greasers are bullies too. Dally is one of them. When Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy, went to the drive in movie, Dally was bulling Cherry and Marci. They were cute girls. These two girls were also Socs and Dally knew he couldn't get them because of that, so he bullied them.

  33. While looking through the web sites I have learned why people bully, how to handle bullies and why it seems to be a big deal now. The bullies are the insecure ones and they try to intimidate people because it makes them feel powerful. I have learned different strategies on how to handle them. The strategies range from walking away, asking them to stop and stand up to them. Bullying seems to be a big deal because it happens to more people or more people are just reporting the incidence now. The best thing you can do is to tell someone about being bullied. You can tell a teacher, friend, a parent or even your guidance counsellor. Lately, bullying seems to be a problem in society; people bully for various reasons but use the different strategies to deal with them.
Bullying seems to be a major factor in our novel, “The Outsiders”. Some characters that are getting bullied include Jonny, who is bullied from his dad, Ponyboy bullies the kids in the field and Darry might have bullied Ponyboy when he was younger. The Socs are the main bullies against the greasers. The motivators of the bullies are the other Socs. Some will stand up and some of them will not stand up and just take it.

  37. Super work you guys! Your paragraph-ma-bobs (thanks Hewitt) are insightful and well supported. I am pleased to see how you all managed to relate the issue of bullies and bullying to the novel.

With regards to bullies, the common theme seems to be that a bully is really just a sad, scared person who hides his (her) insecurities behind a tough (tuff) exterior. When the bully loses his ability to push around his prey, his identity slips away leaving frightened vulnerable individual.

What will happen to Dally if this begins to occur?

  38. I learned that bullying doesn’t just affect the victim of the situation, but also at home and school other people are affected. For example, if a student fears attending school, then their schoolwork could be affected. Secondly, I was reminded that bullies often come from difficult backgrounds where they don’t feel happy or safe, and they release their tension and emotions by bullying others. Bullies also may not see shouting or being physical as wrong. Some cultures are very physical, and children can find it hard to fit in with those who are not as comfortable with touch as they are. Thirdly, bullies may make others feel inferior to boost their own confidence and get them attention. As well as this, bullies generally don’t pick on people who are confident, brave and those who stand up for themselves. Finally, I learned that no matter how hard it may seem, to make sure to tell a teacher or guardian that you are being bullied. This simple-yet-difficult act will change everyone’s life for the better.

The bullies in the novel are Dally, Johnny’s father, and the ‘Soc’ stereotypes. They seem to believe that their role is to control and defeat those appearing weaker, inferior or not up to their standards. The motivation of the Soc’s is to fight back against the Greasers. The motivation of Dally is rebellion. Finally, Johnny’s father’s motivation is getting rid of his anger. Some characters stand up to the bullies. Cherry stood up to Dally and he backed down, and Johnny also stood up to him by telling him to leave the s alone. I think that because of their inhumane and cruel behaviour, these characters will eventually have to deal with guilt, the law and losing friends and family.

  39. One of the most important things I learned was that bullying can cease if you show some confidence and stand up to the bullies by showing you are not scared. Never demonstrate your emotions: that you are angry, upset or vexed just try to pretend that you are not even listening to what they are saying they will soon get bored. What I didn’t know before was that a majority of bullies come from a dysfunctional family often witnessing aggression with in the home so they don’t have a good example to follow. Get a buddy, two people are always better than one, bullies won’t be so intimidating if you had a friend to give you more confidence and stability. Hopefully with enough time the bully’s followers realize the error of their ways and decide not to be part of the gang any more.

So far in the novel The Outsiders there has been bullying when Dally was rude and derogatory towards the girls at the cinema and when Ponyboy and his gang chased a few youngsters across a field. Dally definitely shows signs of being a bully, the way he was being incredibly rude towards others just because they are socials and how he gets into fights constantly and is always looking for arguments. Ponyboy also seems a bit of a bully too, he thought it was fun to just chase a couple of younger guys across a field because they had nothing better to do. However the socials are the biggest and toughest bullies in town they seem ruthless by the way they had beaten up Johnny and Ponyboy dreadfully. Dally exhibits pretty aggressive behaviour so I think that maybe his family isn’t as emotionally stable as other families and so he doesn’t know any better than to follow his example in life. Ponyboy’s motivation is that his parents have died and although Darry is there for him there isn’t really an example to follow one hundred percent of the time. When Dally bullied the social girls at the movies the girls stood up to him and he got beaten at his own game. The bullies could either get stronger and inject more fear into the society or get weaker as more and more people get the courage to stand up to them.

  41. It’s a huge deal because it effects kids education!
If kids get bullied they get distracted in class by the bully.
It can also make kids embarrassed feel sick and bullies block that person from getting other friends.

    Why bullies act that way.

Bullies act badly because their parents are horrible to them.
    Some parents beat them.
Some don’t give them enough attention.
Some Bullies have hard lives and lots of stress.
Some bullies parents have problems with each other.
Some bullies don’t even have parents.

    How to handle bullies.
Offer to help the bullies with his problems.
    Stand up to him.
Throw a curse word at him
    Tell him to go away.
    Punch him!
    Hurt him!
    Kick him!
    Throw rocks at him!
Tell him to to beat it or hit the road!

    What happens to bullies.

Bullies probably get bullied from a bigger bullie.
Or they don’t have good parents.
Mabey his parents are going threw something.
Mabey he is a foster child
Mabey his Dad is in jail
    And his mom is dead.
Mabey one of his parents are dying.

The five most important things ive learned about bulling is that.
    1. If no one payes attension to the bullie when he is bulling some and they all walk away the bullie loses his power
    2. Tell on the bullie make him stop bulling you.
    3. Stand up to the bullie
    4. If you are a witness of a bullie sene tell someone!
    5. Ignore the bullie.
The role of bullies is to strike people on the inside and the out.
Iam reading a book called the outsiders.
There are bullies in my book and they are called the socks.
They like to pick on the greasers, their always jumping the greasers.
    The greasers bullie to.
They chased high school kids across a field.
And tried to annoyingly hit on some sock girls.
The sock girls told the greaser bullies to bug off.
I think the greasers bullie because they were raised in bad environments.
And they hung around bad kids and got into fights all the time.
I think in the end of the book the greasers will change their ways and stop bulling in the end of the book.
