  2. Darry is a good parent.

I think Darry is doing a good job so far, but to take in acount that Darry is Very young, never went to get an eduction and goes to work all the time. It shows that Darry is a good parent because he provides shelter, food and water and works hard to get it. In the novel Darry tells Pony boy off for walk by himself from the movies in result Pony boy gets jumped by the socials. That shows that Darry cares for pony boy. Darry and Pony boy might be like The Maestro because in The Maestro the dad cares so much for the boy that the dad is mean and unfair . Darry is mean and unfair to pony boy because he cares to much for him.

  3. A parent needs special qualities to help them be a good parent to their children. For example, a good parent needs to be able to patiently listen to their children’s problems at any time. They need to be able to help their children find a solution to that problem. Also, another important example is that a parent should be able to help their children understand rules for their daily life (for example table manners or manners in general). A parent needs to be able to have authority over their children, but not punish them for frivolous reasons. A child’s punishment should be reasonable and help teach him/her not to do foolish acts for unnecessary reasons. Lastly, a parent should be able to have fun and spend time with their child. Creating a special bond between a parent and a child is very important because when the parent is old and retired and needs the child to help support him/ her, the special relationship between them will help the child want to support generously. Obviously, to be a good parent you need important virtues to help influence your children.
I believe that Darry is not a good parent because he does not listen to Ponyboy’s problems (unlike Soda) he doesn’t spend time with Ponyboy much because he is too busy with work and he does not let Ponyboy know what he can and can't do. Instead he tells Ponyboy that he needs to get good grades and shouldn’t go to the movies (which is what Ponyboy enjoys doing, so Darry is basically telling Ponyboy not to do activities he enjoys.) In this quote (Page 6) it says, “It seems funny to me that he should look just exactly like my father and act exactly the opposite from him.” This quote explains to us that Darry looks like his dad, but acts in the exact opposite way. Obviously, Ponyboy’s dad was kind and never “rough without meaning to be” (page 6). Darry does not display the important qualities of a parent and therefore, is not a good parent.

  4. In the story The Outsiders a character named Darry acts as the parent even though he is only 20 years old and a brother to the people he takes care of. A good parent is encouraging of their kids. They encourage them of what they are doing and make sure they are trying their best. A good parent will be around when you need someone there. They will make sure their kids aren`t stressed, in trouble or feeling down. Lastly, a good parent would always love their kids and their kids will always love them in return.
Darry is not a good parent to his brothers. Darry does not encourage his brothers. “If I brought home A’s he wanted B’s”pg.13 He just orders him to do better instead of telling him that he is doing good and encouraging him. Secondly, Darry is not around his brothers when they need him. “Darry thinks his life is enough without inspecting other people’s.” pg.3 Darry does not interfere with anyone’s life so therefore he is not always there, especially since right after this quotation occurs Ponyboy could use some help fighting off the Socs. Lastly, Darry does not love Soda and Ponyboy so therefore they do not love him. “Darry love me?” pg.18 Ponyboy does not love Darry and he doesn’t love Ponyboy back. This is not a good relationship to have with your parent, consequently I believe Darry is not a good parent.

  5. i think that Darry is a bad parent because he doesn't treat soda the same as ponyboy and they are both from the same family and so they should be treated the same. the quote that i picked is on pg.9 "i'd just as soon teased a full grown grizzly; but for some reason, Darry seams to like being teased by soda." i picked this quote because this shows that Darry would probably be really mad if ponyboy would have said somthing like that or teased him he would have reacted in a very different way. as you can see there is a big difference between a good parent and Darry but, darry would be a way better parent is he treated them more the same.

  6. I think that Darry isn’t a good parent because he drives people away and shares the blame with everyone but himself. Darry could be a better parent if he could try to be nicer to Ponyboy and not blame him for everything: “Darry really isn’t sorry for anything he does.” Darry could also start being more social and start doing activities that Soda and Ponyboy normally do such as: drawing pictures, going to movies, or picking fights with other greasers. The way how Darry is acting right now is going to drive Soda and Ponyboy so far away so that when he needs help, there is going to be no one to help him.

Darry is a good parent. He sends Ponyboy to school, and makes sure he gets good grades. He disciplines him, and makes sure he is home early on school nights. He looks out for him, and he makes sure he has a roof over his head, and food to eat. “Darry was real good about letting me go places on weekends. On school nights I could hardly leave the house.” (14) Darry doesn’t let Ponyboy stay out too late on weeknights, so that he can be well- rested for school and do his best. If Darry was not a good parent, he would let Ponyboy stay up all night, and let him slack off in school. However, Darry does not, and it is obvious that he is trying his hardest. Darry is doing the best job he can possibly do, and that, in itself, makes a good parent.

  8. I think that Darry is an alright parent. Taking in consideration that Darry is inexperienced and does not know what he is doing, he does an alright job. So far, I think that he could lighten up a little on Pony, because Ponyboy is still the only one in school and is bringing home A's. If he were a good parent, he would be very encouraging and be onto Soda to finish school. After all, Ponyboy is doing very good in school. He also made a mistake after Pony got jumped, because he spazzed out on Pony. That is a mistake because hurting Pony's moral right after Pony had been hurt.

  9. Darry is a good parent because he works really hard to feed his to younger brothers. He also pushes his younger brother, Ponyboy, to do good in school. He tells him to finish all his homework at a certain time every day. Darry is also very young and he already has so many responsibilities. Darry can be a little hard on Ponyboy, but that is because he is really stressed out and he wants him to do good in school. He also set a certain sleep tim for Ponyboy on school nights and this is why I think Darry is a good parent.

  10. In my opinion, Darry is a well rounded parent due to the fact that he acted in a mature and responsible manner while being the sole parent for Soda and Ponyboy. A good parent requires qualities that show that they are capable of looking after a child. In this chapter, Darry proves that he is a very capable parent. For example, when Ponyboy was jumped by the Soc’s, Darry was there shortly after looking after him and seeing if he was alright. In other ways Darry pushes Ponyboy to succeed in school even though he is already trying his hardest. In the chapter, Ponyboy talks about how he brings home a good report card and is in the enriched classes however that never seems to please his brother. Darry is acting in a very unselfish manor by wanting so much more for his brother than he will ever be entitled to.

  11. In the novel “The Outsiders” there is a character called Darry, he is Ponyboy’s older brother. He has to be the parent at the age of 20. A good parent has qualities that include being a supporter when you have activities and they root for you like cheerleaders. A home is a place where you feel safe and it is a sanctuary for you. Parents care for you when you are sick and makes sure that you are feeling better. They will always be there if you need advice or just a hug. A parent is there to make you feel good and not stay down. They also provide you with the basic needs shelter, food, and clothing.

In my opinion I think Darry is not a good parent. He treats him hard because he is treating him with discipline. He is also young and probably does not have a lot of knowledge with parenting skills. He is not a good parent because no one told him what to do he has just learned. A parent will tell stories to their children and he doesn’t have a lot because he doesn’t have many experiences yet.

  12. I think Darry is a good parent under the circumstances that they are in. It would be pretty hard to be a parent at age twenty, but I think he's a good parent because he gives them what they need to survive. He encourages them to do better in school so that they can get a good job. He tries to protect them from danger, for instance when the Soc is holding a knife up to his throat, Darry comes and saves him when he could have been killed. He tries to teach them the difference between right and wrong. It is not fair to judge Darry's parenting skills the same way we judge our parents. He is still only 20 and inexperienced. He doesn't have a high paying job to provide them with a fancy house or private school. But he is doing the best he can for his brothers, and has given them as much as he can. He has made sacrifices for them so he can keep them together as a family and provide them with what they need. Overall, I think Darry is a good parent. He loves his brothers and does the right thing for them.

    Section 2

Quote #1: c. "And you can't win against them no matter how hard you try" (11)

Analysis: This quote is by Ponyboy referring to the Socs. It is important because he realizes that even if he does beat the Socs in a fight, they still come out on top because he’s still poor and they’re still rich. In the end, the Socs win because of their place in society.

Quote #2: a. "Darry's always rough with me without meaning to be." (6)

Analysis: This is Ponyboy saying this quote about Darry. Darry has just saved him from the Socs. It is important because this shows he is very protective over his brothers and he doesn’t want them to get hurt.

Quote#3: e. "He's just got more worries than somebody his age ought to" (17)

This is Darry talking about Ponyboy. He might say this because he may think he has to much on his mind. Or he might think Ponyboy is scared of the Socs. He could be worrying about getting jumped again.

  14. I think Darry is a good parent because he was the one who was there when ponyboy had been jumped by the rich kids named the Socs. The way Darry could be a better parent if he could really mean when he was sorry. If he could loosen up and have some fun his family could look up to him more and he could be a better role model. After all he is only 20 years old and taking care of two younger brothers. He also has to take of his two younger brothers and make sure they are not jumped by any more rich kid Socs. On an overall average, I think Darry is a good parent.

  15. To be a good parent you need to have patience, the ability to set a good example, and sensitivity. You need to be willing to have patience when helping a child or getting them to do something for you. Another quality you need is being able to set a good example for you children as they learn their attitudes and habbits from you. Last but not least you need to be sensitive, sensitive with your child's feelings and how to make them feel better by resolving a problem that they have.
Darry is not a good parent although he has a few good qualities of a parent's he lacks the main ones that could make him a better guardian for Ponyboy and Sodapop. In the novel thus far Darry seems to have a bit of favouratism. " he never hollered at Sodapop - not even when Soda dropped out of school of got tickets for speeding" ( page 13 )It is even said in the book that " I'd just as soon tease a full-grown grizzly; but for some reason, Darry seems to like being teased by soda." ( page 9)Favouratism is never good if you are a parent, as a child always ends up getting upset. However you have to give Darry some credit because he is only twenty and has to make enough money for food and shelter for three people and it is a lot to handle as he is not a true parent.

  16. In the novel The Outsiders, Darry, Ponyboy’s older brother is not a good parent. Darry is not supportive, encouraging or understanding and does not have the qualities of a good parent. Darry even made the impression on Ponyboy that he did not love him. Nevertheless, I do think that it would be very stressful and hard to run a family and provide for them at such a young age and with no experience. Maybe, later on in the novel Darry will mature into a good parent and rise to the occasion. If Darry wants to succeed at being a good parent, he must start to be more considerate of Ponyboy, care and most of all show that he loves him.

  17. I believe that Darry is a not good parent because he does not support, respect or be a role model for Ponyboy. The main characteristics of a good parent are love and tenderness, respect for everyone in the family, guiding from bad influences and supporting in decisions. Darry only shows support when it comes to schoolwork, and even then, he pushes Ponyboy to exceed without taking time to understand the situation. A quote in the book that relates to my argument is ‘Me and Darry just didn’t dig each other. I just couldn’t please him’ (Page 13). This relates to my point because it shows that Darry only pushed Pony, and never appreciated, encouraged or praised his efforts in school.

  18. Great work y'all! I am intrigued by several of the comments. I like Nick's idea regarding The Maestro... certainly hurtful events can have lasting impact on an individual, and Darry's past experiences have influenced his behaviour.

I also like Millie's comment regarding Darry's perceived favoritism. Playing favorites is not a good parental quality. However, I also think that a parent has a duty to provide each child with the motivation, support and instruction that they require as an individual. Perhaps Darry did not scold Soda when he left school because it was the right thing to do. In this way, Darry was providing his younger brother with appropriate guidance. On the other hand, Ponyboy seems much more suited to academics. Thus, Darry is pushing him to succeed. Some times parents might appear to be unfair. However, life is not about fairness, it is about giving people what they need. Ponyboy needs Darry to build predictable structure around him, such that he may excel and break out of the Greaser society. In this way, I think Darry is an excellent parent.

  19. The role of bullies in the outsiders is very important. Ponyboy’s life is surrounded by bullying, because most of his gang are bullies. I think that Johnny and Pony don’t understand why Dallas is bullying Cherry. I think that Pony doesn’t yet understand that Socials are the enemy. I also think that Johnny understands that the Socs are the enemy, and is scared of them, but is too afraid to bully them. Bullying plays a huge role in the outsiders thus far.

  20. BULLYS IN OUR NOVEL:

I think the entire novel represents a struggle against bullies and also resisting the temptation to bully. The Socs are bullies and Dallas is a bully. I think the Socs bully due to contempt of the greasers. Dallas bullies because he hates the Socs and he dislikes any kind of law. I think Dallas is going to wind up insane and the Socs will just remain Socs.

  21. I liked Jacks comment about Johnny and Ponyboy not really understanding bullying even though the rest of the gang are bullies. That separates them from the rest of the gang. It's an amusing pun-outsiders among outsiders.

  22. The first most important thing I learned was that bullies are just trying to be tougher to other kids because of there own problems. Second of all being bullied can make a kid feel the worst because they can feel hurt embarrassed and so much more. Next, three quarters of all kids in the world will or have been bullied or teased. The thing that kids deal with the most is the stress of being bullied. They are always worrying about when the bully will find them next. The reason kids bully is to get attention because they were never liked an dare tying to be popular.

  25. I have learned that bullies are people that have ether had something do to them or have experienced something that makes hem feel bad so they make others feel bad about them self. Lots of people get bullied and about 1 of 4 people say they have been bullied or made fun of in a time in there life. I found all of this information on a web sit called http://kidshealth.org/kid/grow/school_stuff/bullies.html and http://www2.news.gov.bc.ca/news_releases_2005-2009/2008OTP0041-000246.html I have learned lots from these web sites and the most important thing is that the people that are bully don’t like it and they feel bad when they are made fun of. One other thing that I have learned is that bullies may bee mean but there will always be someone bigger who will beat them up or call them names so be sympathetic even though they weren’t nice to you. As you obviously as you can see there is much to learn from this web site and I have learned from it.

In the book I think that potentially that darry and two bit would be bullies because they are mean to kids and they hurt people. I also think that maybe ponyboy would be a bit of a bully. I think that because it clearly stated that they chased them through the fields and that the boys were only juniors at high school. Lots of the people in this boo look like they could be bullies. I think that the reason they maybe bullies is that lots of people think that they are scum bag and that they have completely surrcumb to there dark feelings. As you can plainly see there are many places that bullies are found in the novel we are reading.
